Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Joseph and Rose (David) Kovacs. John worked for Bethlehem Steel Corp. and then retired from Phoenix Clothing Mill as a presser in 1976. John was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing in the Little Lehigh Creek until the age of 90. Date: Tuesday, 1 October 2013 Mary Rose Kovacs, 97, of Allentown, died on Sunday, September 29, 2013, at the Phoebe Home where she had lived for the past six years. She was the wife of John J. Kovacs for 67 years at the time of his passing in 2006. Mary was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Vargo. She had been employed by Sea Nymph in Allentown for several years. Mary was a parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Allentown where she had been a member of the Womens Alliance organization. Survivors: Mary is survived by her brother, James Vargo; sister, Margaret Zartler; daughter, Rosemary; son, John; grandchildren, John Jr., Lisa Filoon, Kathleen Smith; and great-grandson, Jacob. Born in Hungary, he was a son of the late Joseph and Rosa (Vala) Vargo. He came to the United States in 1910 and resided in Allentown. Vargo was employed for 33 years at the American Steel and Wire Co. After it closed its Allentown plant, he became an employe of Allentown Rubber Mill. He retired in December because of illness. He was a member of St. Stephen's Hungarian-Roman Catholic Church, the Hungarian Home Assn. and the Verhovay Ald Assn. Survivors are his wife, Mary (Treiber) Vargo, three daughters, Mary, wife of John Kovacs, Allentown, and Misses An and Margaret, both at home; three sons, Sgt. julius Vargo, with the Air Force in Japan, and Frank and James Vargo, both of Allentown, and four grandchildren. He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of the Catholic War Veterans Post 454, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 4714 and the Topton American Legion. He was a member of St. Lawrence the Martyr Catholic Church. Survivors: Alfred is survived by sons, Frederick Winkler and his wife, Hollie, of Whitehall, Timothy C. He was employed by Mack Trucks, Inc., of Allentown, 38 years until retiring in 1970. Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late John and Rose (Unger) Winkler. He was an army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater. He was a member of St. Stephen of Hungary Catholic Church, Allentown. He was admitted there Sunday. Born in Austria, he was a son of the late Frank and Theresa Winkler. He came to Allentown in 1903. He was married to Mrs. Rosa (Unger) Winkler. Before his retirement 10 years ago, he worked for Bethlehem Furniture Co., Allentown. Prior to that, he was employed for 30 years with Mack. Winkler was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Allentown. Surviving, besides his wife, are five sons, Edward, Elwood and Robert, Allentown; John, New York City, and Francis, at home; five daughters, Rose, wife of Frank Vargo, at home, and Viola, wife of Joseph Sabol; Mrs. Hilda Skoff; Wilma, wife of Joseph Petrakovic, and Caroline, all of Allentown; a brother Joseph, Allentown; a sister, Mrs. Theresa Tauschman, Catasauqua, and 14 grandchildren.
