Source: The Morning Press, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania Date: Wednesday, 20 December 1972 Aaron Hess, 79, of Wapwallopen R.D. 1 died at 8:10 Tuesday evening in his residence. He was in poor health several years but was never bedfast. Born in Wapwallopen R. D. 1, he was the son of the late W. Frank and Lizzie Hess Hess. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was the last of the eighth generation to live on the same farm. He was a farmer all of his life and also waorked in the mines and for ACF Industry, Berwick. He retired 10 years ago. His death breaks a marital span of 44 years with the former Mae Hess. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Wapwallopen. Survivors include the widow, four sons, Aaron W. HEss, Mountaintop, Stephen Hess and earl A. Hess, Wapwallopen R.D.1, and Paul L Hess, Berwick; six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Friday morning from Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck, with the Rev. David Walthour, pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ, Wapwallopen officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick. ___________________________________

"Al" Hess, 77, of Old Tioga Turnpike, Shickshinny, passed away Thursday afternoon, Jan. 31, 2008, at Bonham Nursing Center, Register. He had been in ill health for the past two months. Al was born on top of Jonestown Mountain, Fishing Creek Township, on Dec. 23, 1930, to the late Harmon R. and Vida (Creveling) Hess. He and his wife, Dorothy Patricia "Pat" (Turner) Hess, would have celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary this April 22. He worked with his dad at his garage near Jonestown, and later with their heavy equipment business. He also worked at RPS in Berwick, and later for Fishing Creek Township, where he retired. Al attended a one-room school house in Jonestown for the first eight years of his education and then graduated from Benton High School in 1948. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951, and served until 1954, at one time, serving in Japan. A very active member of the Jonestown United Methodist Church, he held many offices over the years and served in numerous capacities including Lay Speaker, Lay Leader, Chairman of the Administrative Council and Sunday School Teacher. He was a member of the former Odd Fellows Lodge. Al was active with the Boy Scouts and was a volunteer with the Iroquois District. He received the Award of Merit in 1977 from the Iroquois District. Al was best known for his country music, playing guitar and fiddle. He had played live shows in the '50s on radio stations WLTR, WCNR and WHLM on Saturday afternoons. He also played many of the local music parks such as Columbia Park and Evergreen Park. His bands were the "Tumbleweed Ramblers" and the "Sunshine Ramblers." In 1973, his family joined him, becoming known as "The Al Hess Family". Later it became known as "Pat and Al Hess" as their children moved on. They performed at many of the carnivals and nursing homes around the area. In 1998, they recorded a CD called "Anniversary Memories" to commemorate Al's 50 years in country music. Surviving, in addition to his wife, Pat, are their three children: Glenn A. Hess of Jonestown; Randy L. Hess, Hendersonville, Tenn.; Brenda Joy Hess of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a grandson, Daniel J. Hess, of Berwick; a brother, Ross Hess, and his wife, Ethel, of Lightstreet; three sisters: Ellyn Stauffer and her husband, James, of Millersville; Fern Honeywell, Berwick; and Jean Wolfe, Berwick. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Anna Strickland Hess, and by a stepbrother, Ralph Strickland. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the McMichael Funeral Home Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton (Route 487), with the Rev. Darwin C. Goshorn, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Jonestown Cemetery. A viewing will be held Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at McMichael's. Hess, 85, of 316 Dewey St., Nescopeck, died at 10:37 p.m. Monday, June 17, 1996, in the emergency room at the Berwick Hospital Center after being stricken at her home. Born in Danville, on Dec. 28, 1910, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Jessie Hunter O'Neal. She had lived in Nescopeck for 15 years and previously in Berwick and Wapwallopen R.R.1. She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Wapwallopen. Her husband, Raymond W. Hess Sr., died March 30, 1970. A sister, Mary White, died Sept. 15, 1994. Four brothers also died previously: Michael, on July 20, 1963; Donald, on Sept. 20, 1970; William, on May 18, 1980, and Russell O'Neal. Surviving are four sons: Raymond W. HEss Jr., Berwick; Walter HEss, Wapwallopen R.R.3; John Hess, Paradise, and William Hess, Wapwallopen R.R.3; four daughters: Mrs. WIlliam (Betty) Dodd, Berwick; Audrey Eister, Nescopeck R.R.1; Mrs. Ronald (Dorothy) Beach, Briggsville, and Mars. Dale (Alice) Boyer, at home; 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great -grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers: Walter O'Neal Jr. and Richard O'Neal, both of Berwick R.R.1, and Theodore O'Neal, Portland, Ore.; three sisters: Audrey Smith, Berwick R.R.1; Bertha Kishbaugh, Berwick R.R.4, and Mrs. Leo (Arlene) Hunsinger, Binghamton, N.Y. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck, with her nephew, the Rev. Larry Smith, Berwick R.R.1 officiating. Source: The Morning Call, Allentown, Pennsylvania Date: Tuesday, October 25, 1932 A brief illness of a complication of ailments ended in the death of Amandus Hess, retired Northampton county farmer, at 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home, the residence of a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry P. Schaffer, 2155 Main street, Northampton, at the age of 75 years. Mr. Hess was a son of the late Stephen and Eliza Wotring Hess, was born in Moore township, Northampton county. He was a farmer practically all his life and before retiring from active life upon the death of his wife, Rosa A., nee Abel, four years ago, resided between Kreidersville and Seemsville. Since then he resided with his daughter at Northampton. He was a lifelong member of the Reformed congregation of the Zion Stone church at Kreidersville. Surviving him are two daughters, Mrs. Mary Heckman, this city and Mrs. Henry P. Schaffer, Northampton; two grandchildren and six brothers, Theodore, Tilghman and William, of Northampton R1; Stephen and Thomas, of Northampton, and George, of Catasauqua. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon with brief services at his late home at 1:30 o'clock followed by church at Kreidersville, Rev. George Kopenhaven and Rev. Hiram Frantz officiating. Source: Press Enterprise, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania Date: Saturday, 10 February 2007 Budd Dwane "Pappy" Hess, 88, of Grassmere Park, Benton, died early Friday morning, Feb. 9, 2007, at his home. Born Oct. 8, 1918, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Henry Stanley Hess and Beatrice Ione (Golder) Hess. He and his beloved wife, Virginia P. (Rank) Hess, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Oct. 24. A retired builder, Mr. Hess built churches around the 48 states for many years. He lived in Colorado with his wife and children from 1950 to 1963. In 1970, he founded Budd Hess and Sons Construction Co. in Benton with his two sons. After retiring in 1986, he spent his remaining years helping his son, Fred, operate and maintain Grassmere Park Campground. He attended the Sugarloaf School and later attended Benton High School and then served in World War II. Mr. Hess was a former member of the Brandon United Methodist Church, now known as Christ United Methodist Church of Central. An avid outdoorsman, he loved working, hunting and fishing. Surviving in addition to his wife, Virginia, are his three children: Dwane S. Hess and his wife, Cindy, of Fort Mill, S.C.; Barbara J. Politano of Wheat Ridge, Colo.; Fred D. Hess of Grassmere Park; seven grandchildren: Troy Hess; Rhonda Hess; Michael Politano; Jill Boerner; Amie Pietro; Stacey Geffken; and Wendy Gable; 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters: June Sones, Orangeville; Bette Gray, Lightstreet; Kay Mausteller and her husband, John, of Rupert; and Shirley Fulmer of Waller. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the McMichael Funeral Home Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton (Route 487). Burial will be in the Waller Cemetery. Source: The Times, Fairmont, West Virginia Date: Friday, 15 February 2002 Charles Clinton Hess Sr., 63, of Worthington, died suddenly Thursday (Feb. 14, 2002) at the Trumbull County Hospital in Warren, Ohio. He was born April 28, 1938, in Worthington, the son of the late Albert Roy and Ethel Goldie Furbee Hess. Mr. Hess was a retired automobile mechanic who worked for West Fork Motors in Shinnston. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Clarksburg Moose Lodge No. 52. He enjoyed cutting grass, doing yard work and working on cars. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Edith Henderson Hess; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles C. Jr. and Cindy Hess of Fairmont; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and David Polis of Fairmont; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert R. Jr. and Joyce Hess of Mill Fall, and James and Diana Hess of Worthington; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Grace Fisher of Wellborn, Fla., Betty Wright, and Dotty and James Kropog, all of N. Olmsted, Ohio; five grandchildren, Charles Hess III, Krista Terneus, Joshua Cook, Joseph Scott Hess and James Andrew Hess; one great-grandson, Charles C. Hess IV; one sister-in-law, Helen Hess of Bellview; and several nieces and nephews. Hess, 89, died at 5:40 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at the Orangeville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she had lived since Oct. 29, 1998. She had been in failing health since November 1995. She had lived at her Briar Creek Township address since 1934. Born Dec. 11, 1910, in Hazleton, she was a daughter of the late Robert M. and Ellen Mae (Andreas) Hough. She was educated in the Berwick schools. In her earlier years, Hess had worked at Lady Ester Corp., Berwick. She was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church, Berwick. An avid reader, her hobbies included quilting and crocheting, for which she made her own patters. She and her husband, Rolland E. Hess, celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on Feb. 13. In addition to her husband, she is survived by six children; Mrs. Ronald (Ellen J.) Fox, Berwick; Howard F. Hess, Berwick R.R.4; Janet E. Charles, Pensacola, Fla.; Ronald A. Hess, Berwick R.R.4; Rodney E. Hess, Berwick R.R.1; and David R. Hess, Orangeville R.R.2; 18 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Hess was the last member of her immediate family. Source: Press Enterprise, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania Date: Sunday, 29 May 2011 Dorothy Patricia (Turner) Hess - Jonestown musician a local favorite Dorothy Patricia "Pat" (Turner) Hess, widow of Al Hess, who died Jan. 31, 2008, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2011, in the surroundings of dear friends and family. Dorothy Patricia Turner was born Feb. 14, 1937, in Inwood, W.Va., to parents Willis and Florence Turner. In May of 1945, the family moved to Scoblick Brothers Orchard in Falls, Wyoming County, Pa., and then to Luzerne County in 1947. She attended schools in Gerrardstown, W.Va., Mill City, Pa., and a one-room schoolhouse in Ross Township. She spent three years at Shickshinny High School, then graduated from Lehman Jackson Ross in 1954. Pat married Albert Bruce Hess, a Jonestown musician with "The Tumbleweed Ramblers," on April 22, 1961. While expecting her daughter, she began singing with their sons as "The Al Hess Family Band," and later with local musicians as "Al and Pat Hess and Friends." They were a local favorite at many carnivals, festivals, churches and nursing homes. After Al's passing, she continued to sing with the company of friends. She also enjoyed being outdoors, wildflowers, bird watching, gardening, baking, puzzles and reading. Pat worked as a seamstress at Harvic Sportswear in Sweet Valley, at one time traveling to New York City to picket during the Garment Union labor strikes. She also worked for Social Security in Wilkes-Barre. After taking time off to be an at-home mom, she worked as an office assistant to various doctors within the Bloomsburg Hospital system for 17 years. Having a servant's heart and love of God, Pat was very active in the Jonestown United Methodist Church. She held many offices, including teacher, administrative council chairwoman, pianist, as well as a lay speaker. She was a Boy Scout leader for 20 years, including one year as Scoutmaster of Troop 69 (Jonestown). She received the Iroquois District Award in 1981 and earned her Woodbadge beads. She is survived by brothers, George Ronald Turner of Knoxville, Tenn., Ed Turner of Dallas, Pa.; two sons, Glenn Hess of Jonestown and Randy Hess of Nashville, Tenn.; daughter Brenda Paul of Edmond, Okla.; grandson Daniel Hess of Berwick, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. A brother, Charles Donald Turner, is deceased. The family will be continuing its Memorial Day tradition by performing at the Sweet Valley Fireman's Carnival on Monday at 11 a.m. A viewing will be held Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the McMichael Funeral Home Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road (Route 487), Benton. Source: Times West Virginian, Fairmont, West Virginia Date: Friday, 9 February 2007 Mrs. Edna Audrey Hess, 76, passed away at home on Feb. 7 after a serious illness. Edna was born Feb. 19, 1930, at Railway Cottages Kempston Hardwick, Bedfordshire, England, to the late Ivy Grace Edmands Law and Harold Ellerton Law. Edna left school in the spring of 1944 to begin work at the CO-OP and later Skeffco. Edna came to West Virginia in December of 1952. Fairmont is where her daughters were born and lived until 1958 when she and her two little girls Deborah and Dannette returned to Rugby, England. Edna raised her daughters with the loving help of her mother and extended family. In 1983 Edna followed her daughters back to the United States. She returned to West Virginia to be closer to her daughters and grand- children. During this time Edna worked as a seamstress, an in-home companion and caregiver to several elderly ladies in Fairmont and she also cleaned houses. Although never a tom-boy Edna enjoyed the outdoors. In her younger days she loved bicycle riding and seaside visits. In the later years she was still extremely active and could often be seen walking around Fairmont doing errands and visiting friends and family. Edna loved building up conversations and to tell stories of her life in England all in her clear British accent. Edna was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on June 19, 1955. She was a member of the Fairmont congregation. Her hope of a resurrection to a paradise earth was strong to the end. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Edna Audrey Hess; one brother, Bernard Law; and one son-in-law, Raymond Constantino. Edna is survived by her eldest daughter, Deborah R Wilson, husband Timothy of Fairmont; her youngest daughter, Dannette S Constantino of Morgantown; her brother, Maurice Law and wife Janet of England; sister-in-law, Sylvia Law of Rugby, England; and her grandchildren, Ian and Berenice I Constantino of Morgantown, Anthea L. and Brandi R. Wilson of Fairmont, Erin G Hudson and husband Jordan of Fairmont; great-granddaughter, Ethne J Hudson; and many loving nieces and nephews in England. Edna will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1620 Fairmont Ave., at 7 p.m. Monday. George McElroy, a longtime family friend, will give the service. Carpenter & Ford, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, is in charge of the arrangements. The family wishes to thank all their friends for the loving help and support. Hess, 69, of 245 Jefferson St., Bloomsburg, died Monday afternoon in the Bloomsburg Hospital, where he was admitted Sunday evening. He had been ill for several years. He was a resident of Jefferson Street for 10 years and formerly lived along Ferry Road. Born Feb. 3, 1922, in Fishingcreek Township, he was a son of the late William Wallace and Willa Manning Hess. He was employed as an auto body mechanic by Borden Foods, retireing in 1975 after 20 years with the company. He was a Navy veteran, having served during World War II. Mr. Hess was a member of the VFW, Elks and Moose lodges, all of Bloomsburg, and the Millville American Legion. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, the former Harriette Bowman; a daughter, Beatrice D. Romig, Bloomsburg; five sons: E. Craig Hess, Lansing, Kan.; D. Dennis Hess, Reidsville, N.C.; Terry Fritz, Ronnie L. and Neil R. Hess, all of Bloomsburg; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchidlren. Also surviving are five sisters: Fannie Buckalew, Chula Vista, Calif.; Ethel Sutliff, Jonestown; Geneva Lowe, Bloomsburg; Mrs. Robert (Mildred) Norman, Ornageville, Mrs. Carl (Helen) Chapin, Stillwater, And Lois Yost, Wapakineta, Ohio; and two brothers: Joseph Hess, Danville R.R., and Richard Hess, Buckhorn. She was in her sixty-fifth year. She leaves her husband, Stephen Hess; one daughter, Mrs. James Hiestand; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Wolf, Seidersville; Mrs. Arthur Leibenguth, Northampton; Mrs. Abraham Fenstermacher, San Diego, Calif., and one brother, John Solt, Bethlehem. Funeral services will be held from her late home next Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, daylight saving time, with interment in the Stone church cemetery. ___________________________________

Source: Columbian, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania Date: Thursday, 10 August 1905 Mrs. Aaron W. Hess died at her home in Mifflinville on Sunday after a protracted illness, aged seventy-three years. She had suffered much form paralysis and of late had been almost helpless. She was an earnest Christian lady, and a consistent member of the Lutheran church. She leaves to survive her a husband and four children, namely: Mrs. A.W. Snyder and H.W. Hess, of Mifflinville and Dr. M.J. Hess and Geo. W. Hess of Bloomsburg. The funeral took place yesterday and was largely attended. ___________________________________

"Pappy" Hess, 68, of 236 Oak Alley, Slatington, died Tuesday in Allentown Osteopathic Medical Center. He was the husband of Helen G.M. (Miller) Hess. They were married 41 years in August. Hess was a laborer in the ingot old department of Bethlehem Steel Corp. for 43 years before retiring in 1986. Born in emerald, he was a son of the late Benjamin and Mamie (Schleicher) Hess. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Hess passed away at his home near Petersville church, aged 72 years. Mr. Hess was a son of the late Stephen and Eliza nee Wotring Hess and was born at Seemsville. All of his life was given over to agricultural pursuits, the activities of the community in which he resided, affairs of the Petersville Union church and his family, to whom he was devoted. For many years he was a member of the church consistory and was helpful otherwise in the congregation. Besides his widow, Emma nee Beil Hess, there survive these children; Preston S, Cherryville; Mrs. Harry Fehnel, Dannersville, and Mrs. Geo. Dengler of Bethlehem. He had been a patient there three days. Born in Benton, he was engaged in farming and in 1927 received the Master Farmer Award of Luzerne County. He retired in 1940. For 18 years he served as a school bus driver and for four years was Nescopeck Township Road Supervisor. Hess was a member of the Mount Zion Reformed Church, Briggsville, and was an elder, treasurer, Sunday School superintendent, and church custodian. He also served as treasurer of Mount Zion Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery Association. He was a member of the P.O.S. of A., Wapwallopen; treasurer of I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 1152, Hobbie, a charter member and treasurer of the Berwick Grange for 35 years. Surviving are his wife, the former Florence Mowery, Mifflin; five daughters, Mrs. Robert Chapin, Mrs. Harold Smith, both of Briggsville; Mrs. Otto Gearhart, Shickshinny; Mrs. Clarence Hontz, Clearfield; and Mrs. Charles Mowery, Hobbie; three brothers, Elmer Hess, Briggsville; Myron, Nescopeck; and Leland, Wilkes-Barre; three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Mathers, Danville; Mrs. Lulu Milham, Orangeville; and Mrs. Eva Golder, Shickshinny; and several grandchildren. Funeral services will be held from Mount Zion Church at 2 p.m. Friday, with Rev. Wayne Lutz, pastor of the United Church of Christ, officiating. He was retired from the Naval Air Systems Command Headquarters, Washington, D.C., as an Industrial Procurement Specialist and previously worked at the former Olmsted Air Force Base in Middletown. George was a member of the Harrisburg Hunters and Anglers Association, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the American Association of Retired Persons and was a charter member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Penbrook, and a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit, Palmyra. His military service in WWII was with the Army Air Corps, 77th Troop Carrier Squadron in the European Theatre of Operation, having been active in the Battle of the Bulge and participation in the engagement to capture the crucial bridge at Arnhem for which he received the Air Medal. He is the widower of Marguerite C. Hess and is survived by two sons, Gregory G. Hess and wife Donita, of Palmyra, William N. Hess and wife Bobbi, of Alexandria, LA; one grandson, Derek Hess; four granddaughters, Nicole Diestler, Amy Hess, Molly Hess and Lisa Heister; three great grandchildren, Aidan and Sydney Heister, and Semaje Diestler; and many nieces and nephews. Harriette had attended Orangeville High School. For many years she worked as a retail clerk at Woolworth's and Grant's Department Stores in Bloomsburg, and at the Ames Store in Berwick. She retired in the late 1980s. She was a member of the Berwick Senior Center. Born April 11, 1906, in Pine Township, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Nora (Peterman) Sherwood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas R. Hess, on May 20, 1952. Mrs. Hess was an LPN and had worked for nursing homes in Orangeville. She had also done private duty nursing. She was a member of Grace Chapel United Methodist Church of Talmar. Her hobbies included knitting and quilting. A lifelong resident of the Benton area, she was educated in a one-room schoolhouse in Pine Township and went to nursing school in Berwick. Surviving are her three children: Carrie B. Whitenight and her husband, Darcy, of Matthews, N.C.; Maxine H. Stine and her husband, Clair, of High Hill, Mo.; and Wayne Hess, Benton; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Hess, a well-known retired blacksmith, died instantly on Thursday afternoon. He was 75 years old and was born in Moore township, Northampton county, the son of William and Elizabeth, nee Laub, Hess. For many years he conducted a blacksmith shop, retiring about sixteen years ago. He is survived by two sons and two daughters, Francis A. and Alvin S. Hess, son of Richard M. and Sarah Morgan Hess, was born February 21, 1883, near Corbin Kansas on the family homestead. He grew to manhood in the same community, attending the Spring Creek rural school and the Wellington High School. At an early age he became a member of the Falls Center Methodist Church, later transferring to the Corbin Methodist Church where his membership remained until his death. In his early twenties he served with the Kansas National Guard at Fort Riley, Kansas. On February 24, 1909 he married to Ada Beryl Irwin in Wichita, Kansas. They established their home near Corbin, Kansas and resided in Sumner County all their married life except for nine years when they lived near Sedan, Kansas, in Chautouqua County. His wife Ada passed away February 17, 1966. He was a kind and loving father. He liked people and no one remained a stranger to him. Visiting with friends and neighbors was his special joy. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ada; two granddaughters; two brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his children: Robert H. Hess of Wichita, Mrs. B. J. (Verna) Evans of rural Wellington, Mrs. Ted (Pearl) Lungren of rural Caldwell, Richard M. Hess of Dewey, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Frank (Ferne) Boyce of Fremont, California; two sisters, Mrs. Lince Christensen and Mrs. Will Blecha, both of Wichita. Born May 3, 1911, in Hobbie, she was a daughter of the late Alvin L. and Carrie A. (Whitehead) Hess. For several Years, she transported students for the Conyngham Township School District. Hess was a very active member of St. John United Church of Christ, Wapwallopen, and was a member of the former Willing Workers of the church. She enjoyed doing ceramics. Hess was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron U. Hess, who died December 1972. Also three brothers; Hoyt Hess, Reymond Hess, and Ralph B. Hess; and two sisters: Arlene Hess and Mabel Huttenstine. Surviving are four sons: Aaron W. Hess, Mountain Top; Stephen Hess, Bloomsburg; Earl Hess, Wapwallopen; and Paul Hess, Berwick; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Beatrice Hinchcliff, Wapwallopen. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, from the Mayo Funeral Home, Inc., 77 N. Main St., Shickshinny, with her pastor the Rev. Roy Day, officiating. Here he met Pearl Phillips whom he married on January 19,1910. They farmed south east of Shelby, Nebraska until They moved to Osceola, Nebraska in1949. Mr. Hess was always active in church work until he became ill. He was a member of a rural Church – Greenleaf Union. Later he moved his membership to the United Brethren Church in Shelby. Mr. Hess is survived by one sister; Bessie Kishbaugh of Orangeville, Pennsylvania; four children, (Frances) Mrs. Leroy Pointer of Ruskin, Nebraska, Marvin of Herman, Minnesota, Raymond of Seattle, Washington, and Leonard of White City, Oregon. Source: Examiner-Enterprise, Bartlesville, Oklahoma Date: Sunday, 12 May 2013 Richard Marion Hess was born to Larnie A. and Ada Beryl Hess on September 12, 1922, on a farm near Corbin, Kansas. He passed from this life on May 7, 2013, at the age of 90. Richard attended schools in south central Kansas graduating from Sedan High School in 1941. After graduation, Richard joined the war effort by enlisting in the United States Coast Guard. He was proud of the time he spent serving on the USS Cavalier, an attack transport ship which took part in five landings in the Pacific including Saipan, Tinian, Leyte, Luzon, and Subic Bay. On January 30, 1945, the USS Cavalier was hit by a torpedo from a two-man Japanese submarine, lost all power, and was towed back to Pearl Harbor with the crew aboard. Richard participated in the VFW and enjoyed reunions of the Cavalier crew which included Cesar Romero who he said was a good actor and a very nice person. In 1944, a year and a half after meeting in a drug store in Bartlesville, Richard married Helen Lucille Lynch of Dewey. After World War II, Richard went to work at the Phillips Refinery in Borger, Texas. When he took a job with Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, he and Helen established their home in Dewey where they have lived for nearly 70 years. Following his retirement in 1985, Richard grew the best tomatoes and built the coolest bird houses in the area. Richard loved to fish, to build things, to grow things, and OU football. Most of all, he enjoyed and loved his family. Richard and Helen were married for nearly 70 years and through that union had three children, six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Children included Richard Lee Hess and his wife Mary of Edmond; Marla Ann Stroud and her husband Garry of Arma, Kansas; and Rhonda Gail Songer and her husband Steve of Ramona. Grandchildren include Melissa Houser and husband Tod of Tulsa; Derek Walker and wife Robbie of Lufkin, Texas; Rachel Hess O'Brien and husband Blake of Houston; Abigail Francis (Hess) Shaw and husband Clint of Tulsa; Matthew Brandon Songer and Madison Brooke Songer of Ramona. Great grandchildren include Kaleb D. Houser of Tulsa; Abigail F., Emma G., and Aiden D. Walker of Lufkin, Texas; and Norah Louise O'Brien of Houston. Services were held Saturday, May 11, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at East Bartlesville Christian Church, Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Interment was at Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville. Born Feb. 10, 1924, in Jonestown, he was a son of the late Wallace and Willa Manning Hess. He served with the Army in Germany during World War II. In 1987, Hess retired from Magee Carpet Co., Bloomsburg, where he was employed for 35 years. He also operated his own farm in Madison Township and enjoyed raising hogs. Hess was a member of the Bloomsburg VFW and Millville American Legion posts. His wife, the former Cecelia Haladay, died in Januray 1977. Tow brothers, Joe and Edsel Hess, also died previously, as did five sisters: Elizabeth Hassert, Lois Yost, Fannie Buckalew, Ethel Sutliff and Geneva Lowe. He is survived by five daughters: Debra, Darla, Pamela and Cindy, all of Dutch Hill; and Donna Mensch, Bloomsburg: two sons: Richard, Dutch Hill; and Douglas, Union, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his companion of 15 years, Patricia Karnss, Dutch Hill; and two sisters: Helen Chapin, New Columbus; and Mildred Norman, Dallas. Bob was born and reared in Fullerton, Whitehall Township on August 24, 1933, the son and only child of Ray P. and Hazel E. (Gray) Hess. He was an Eagle Scout. After graduating from Whitehall High School in 1951 and Lafayette College in 1955, he served as civil affairs officer with the Army in Korea. He then received a M.A. degree from Clark University in Worcester, Mass. Later during his career he did extensive graduate studies at Temple and Rutgers University. While at Clark University, Bob began teaching assistantship. He continued his education career teaching secondary English and Social Studies in the Bensalem and Neshaminy school districts in lower Bucks County. He later worked in a private special education school, and was the Education Director of a tutoring center. He later became an administrator in adult trade schools, before retiring from education to fulfill a lifetime whim to work in a hardware store. After nine years as an associate and sales coordinator at the Fairless Hills Sears Hardware, he left to care for his parents, and then to become a testing specialist at Montgomery County Community College until 2012. He was a member of St. John's UCC Church in Fullerton as a young man, and again in his retirement to Whitehall. Survivors: Daughter; Libby Hess of Upland. Son; Preston Hess of Lansdale. Born in Berwick, June 25, 1913, he was a son of the late Frank and Laura Mae (Bower) Hess. During his working career, Mr. Hess built roads in the Berwick area with W.P.A. He was also a brake press operator for the former AC&F. He later worked for CoManco Inc. of Berwick, where he was a fabrication supervisor. Well known for his abilities as a carpenter, Mr. HEss built his own house and the homes of several of his children. He also owned a saw sharpening service. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church of Berwick. Mr. Hess was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Dartha E. Hough Hess, who died Feb. 17, 2000. Also, he was preceded by siblings Dorothy Trapane, Kenneth Hess and Harold Hess. Surviving are his six children: Mars. Ronald (Ellen J.) Fox, Berwick; Howard F. Hess, Berwick; Janet E. Born in Bloomsburg, on May 19, 1950, he was a son of Harriette (Bowman) Hess of Berwick, and the late Edsel Roy Hess, who died in 1991. Mr. Hess was a 1969 graduate of Central Columbia High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, but was stationed in Korea. Ronnie last worked for the Kleerdex Company in Bloomsburg prior to his disability. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, golf and baseball. Survived by: son, Shane Hess of Bloomsburg; daughter, Shannon Hess of rural Benton; son, Mike Hess of Bloomsburg; and four grandchildren. Also survived by his siblings: Craig Hess of Levenworth, Kan.; Dennie Hess of Burlington, N.C.; Terry Hess of Bloomsburg; Beatrice Long of Berwick; Neil Hess of Bloomsburg and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and sister, Bonnie Jean VanPelt, who died in 1980. There will be no visitation or funeral service. In 1982, he moved to the Harrisburg area and became a mechanic with Gannett Fleming Inc., retiring in1991. Mr. Hess was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Enola. His wife of 60 years, the former Mary Esther Kline, died May 1, 2002. Three brothers also died previously: Allen Hess, Arden Hess and Zender Hess. He is survived by four children: mrs. Stephen Hess, 81, of 733 Washington Ave., Northampton, died early yesterday in the Haff hospital of complications resulting from his advanced years. He had been ill since Thanksgiving. Mr. Hess, who had been residing with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James Hiestand, was born near Beersville, the son of Stephen and Eliza, nee Woodring, Hess. A retired farmer, he came to Northampton in 1922. He was a member of the Reformed wing of Zion Stone church, Cartersville. Survivors other than his daughter include a twin brother, William Hess of Allentown, a brother, Thomas Hess of Northampton, three grandsons and one great-grandchild. His wife preceded him in death in 1927. Mr. Hess had never lived more than 10 miles from the place where he was born. His death parts a marriage union of more than 65 years. He is survived by his widow and the following children: Palmer, Lillie and Sally Hess, of Wapwallopen; Mrs. Herbert Peters, of Berwick, and Paul G.
